My interest in PBAE continues. I developed the following summary page based on some of the facts concerning this type of pedagogy... I have found lots of great TED talks and hope to share some tidbits with my students: A student sent me a message about his work. We discussed things back and forth. Here is an excerpt of that conversation:
Student: Can we paint one of the pages in the conservation project on another page separate from the book? Me: Yes! That is fine. As long as you have several in your sketchbook, it's fine to have some that are separate. Can't wait to see how the illustrations are coming along FYI: I'm going to do a periodical review of them soon. I'll announce this when we come back to school. I'll give everybody a week's notice to have half of the sketches finished. Since 16 will be due at the end, the review will be to see that everyone has half of them completed (so...I'll be looking to see that everybody has around 8 small sketches of consumer items). Student: Ok thanks... electricity counts right? Me: Yes! If you can show what type of item might be utilized to expend the energy/electricity, I think that will be a great addition to your sketches...Good idea! Student: Would this work? Ps I don't know what's goin in the other box lol (student attached progress picture to message) Me: Wow! Yessss! This is so cool! I love the lettering, too. Great ideas, here! The whole idea of being "plugged in" is very clear, and makes the whole theme come together... Student: Ok thanks…If I get it finished I’ll send you a picture Me: Nice! That sounds great! Student sent picture of finished work this morning. (***See progress picture, and finished work below...) "Snow Day" at CCHS. Students can work on consumerism sketchbooks at home. Also, they can work on webpages if they have computer access. I'm attaching a great handout that I will be using with the students as we work on our weaving project: Before class: Several students showed me their consumerism sketches, and their work seems to coming along quite nicely. Many of them are using a mix of media which has allowed for lots of variety. Some are working on “theme” based pages. One student mentioned that she is finding less and less things to illustrate in her sketchbook because she has been taking great strides in consuming much less. “Waste in Cumberland County” (reading): Read highlights on a fact sheet. It the water is polluted then our ground would be, too Distribution of bags and demo on how to make “plarn”>>>Students made plarn (Student mentioned that a church they went to was involved in making sleeping mats for the homeless using plarn) Demo on how to make a cardboard loom>>>Students measured, cut, and constructed loom (Some students really had fun making the "teeth" on the loom and became very animated. Tactile learners were in the zone!) Students watched tutorial on weaving (Student began to think of a few things he could make out of plarn. He seems to really like the idea of constructing something 3-dimensional out of this material). After class: A student told me the class had made them more conscious of what they were doing in terms of eco-friendly practices. She said that she had to think twice about using paper towels to dry her hands in the bathroom. Several students have asked if they can go back to the lab, and work on their webpages again. I will have to work this into our schedule at some point as many students do not have access to computers at home. They are eager and they are creating some great work on Weebly. I can't wait to see what comes next! Pictures of our weaving process so far: Essential questions: What are some environmental issues that affect people? How has consumption/waste affected natural environments throughout time? How are natural systems a part of a symbiotic relationship? How can environmental art encourage others to consider a sustainable future? Unit objectives: Students will understand how humans affect nature. Students will understand the connection between environmental systems and humans. Students will understand how preventing harmful human impact may help the sustainability within nature.
